Smoke began to show from beneath the MacArthur Bridge about 7:45 a.m. Thursday. Firefighters used a bucket truck to reach the bridge. The fire from railroad ties was out within about 45 minutes.

There was no immediate word on the cause of the fire. No one was hurt but train and barge traffic was halted for a short time.
