November 1992: Loses bid to succeed Democrat Joe Moseley as Boone County prosecutor after Moseley is elected to state Senate.
November 1992: Democrat Jay Nixon defeats Republican David Steelman in the general election for attorney general. Hulshof remains in the new AG's office.
June 1994: Replaces challenger Rick Hardy as the Republican nominee to face incumbent Rep. Harold Volkmer, a Democrat, in the general election after Hardy cites depression and withdraws from the race.
November 1994: Loses to nine-term incumbent Volkmer.
August 1996: Wins Republican primary against Harry Eggleston, a St. Charles County eye surgeon, by 165 votes.
November 1996: Defeats Volkmer and is elected to Congress. Re-elected five more times without serious opposition.
June 2001: Passes on bid to face Democrat Jean Carnahan in 2002 race for U.S. Senate. Seat is won by Republican Jim Talent.
2004: Opts against running in governor's race. Republican Matt Blunt defeats Democratic nominee Claire McCaskill.
May 2007: Withdraws candidacy for University of Missouri system president after curators offer the job to New Jersey businessman Terry Sutter. Hulshof was one of three finalists in the initial search. Curators later hire former Sprint Nextel Corp. chief executive officer Gary Forsee.
January 2008: Enters race to succeed Blunt as governor after the incumbent decides not to seek re-election.
