Demolition of the old Cape Girardeau County Juvenile Detention Center begins Thursday at 325 Merriwether St. in Cape Girardeau. County parks employees are getting the property ready to sell. A new facility at 2137 Rust Ave., which opened in July, consolidated the former juvenile detention center with office and court space for juvenile-department employees of the 32nd Judicial Circuit. The old county juvenile home, which was one of several in the state shut down after state budget cuts in 2011, opened in July 1974. Built at a cost of $167,000, it replaced a facility at 37 S. Frederick St. that had operated since 1966.
