A flash flood watch is in effect for much of Southeast Missouri and Southern Illinois from midnight to 6 p.m. Wednesday.
The National Weather Service said in the watch issued Tuesday that an unusual weather system for this time of year has resulted in additional moisture in the atmosphere. The heaviest rain is expected east of the Mississippi River, but rain that has already soaked Southeast Missouri could contribute to flash flooding there. Rainfall is expected to begin overnight.
