ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Big chunks of ice are clogging the Mississippi River in the St. Louis area, causing headaches for businesses that use the river.
The Army Corps of Engineers is flushing ice out at the Melvin Price Lock and Dam at Alton, Ill., and in the Chain of Rocks area of north St. Louis. In some places, ice is 8 to 10 inches thick.
Some barges are avoiding the area out of concern the ice could damage the barges.
