The fifth annual Southeast Missouri State University Chemistry Bowl attracted about 300 chemistry students and teachers from Southeast Missouri, including these students from Cape Girardeau Central High School. Jeff Jewell, right, Steve Hunt and Kevin Dry worked on a qualitative analysis experiment. The object was to determine which halide ions were present in an unknown solution which may have contained any combination of chloride, bromide and iodide ions. The Southeast Missouri State University Eldercare Center Program was renamed the Grace V. Hoover Eldercare Center Program during a dedication ceremony at the center, 805 N. Sprigg St. Here, Hoover, accepted the dedicatory plaque from university president, Dr. Kala Stroup. Looking on was Ann Dombrowski, president of the board of regents. (Southeast Missourian archive)

A new, one-lane bridge over Juden Creek on East Cape Rock Drive was scheduled to open the following week. The bridge replaced one built in 1922 that was closed in July 1985 because of rotting support timbers.
