Though the mercury sank to 26 degrees last night in his peach orchard, David Diebold was optimistic enough to smile this morning. In an effort to fool Mother Nature, his irrigation system encapsulated the buds overnight and "locked in" a temperature of 32 degrees on six acres of trees growing next to his retail store near Benton. Bonkers the Clown, portrayed by Dave Kaempfer, clowned around during the United Way's Blitz Day kickoff breakfast held at the Drury Lodge. Looking on were co-chairmen Mike Heston, Cape Girardeau Civic Center, and Roger Nichols, Cape Girardeau County Chapter of the Red Cross. Farmers of the area and their hosts, Cape Girardeau businessmen, visited a number of Cape Girardeau industries. Here they viewed the Missouri Dry Dock and Repair Co., where they saw a few towboat propellers waiting to be repaired. The firm reconditioned about 1,000 of these big screws annually, according to W.A. Connally, at left, who is explained the service to visitors. The event was sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce's agriculture committee. (Southeast Missourian archive photo)

"Rip Van Winkle," a legendary character, was put to rest here. After 15 years atop the Sleepy Hollow Sign on North Kingshighway, he was taken down, making room for a new sign. Sleepy Hollow became Carriage House Furniture Gallery. Removing the sign were, from left, Bob Jackson, general manager, and Dave Patrick, owner. (Fred Lynch ~ Southeast Missourian archive photo)

Patrolman Eddy James wrote a description of an unoccupied pickup truck which crashed into the Union Electric service building at 45 S. Minnesota Ave. The truck apparently slipped out of gear and rolled across the street, coming to rest against the building. (Southeast Missourian archive photo)
