Cheri Sides, a 1987 graduate of Cape Central High School, was the recipient of the Lincoln-John S. Cobb Alumni Scholarship presented during a special award ceremony at Second Baptist Church. The $500 scholarship was presented by Mary Warfield Frederick, a Cobb School graduate and high school teacher in Essex, Missouri. This was the first scholarship awarded since the Cobb School reunions started in 1975. It was hoped that the scholarship would become an annual project. (Joel House ~ Southeast Missourian archive)

Maggie Kuhn, the founder of the Gray Panther movement, was pictured with Dave Niswonger, the head of Southeast Missouri Hospital. Kuhn was here to keynote a gerontology conference sponsored by the hospital, the Institute of Gerontology, and the College of Health and Human Services at Southeast Missouri State University.
