Published April 29, 1988. Teachers and students at Washington School dressed up as their favorite storybook characters as part of the Reading Is Fundamental program. The program was designed to help motivate and encourage children to read more. Published Sept. 23, 1987. The Cape Girardeau Public School Maintenance Department, along with 35 workers from the Missouri Division of Employment, worked from 7 a.m. until late afternoon Tuesday, to put up the bubble over the Cape Central Municipal Pool. Published Nov. 20, 1987. The Delta High School Future Farmers of America presented a "Food for America" program to students at May Greene School. The program was designed to give the students a better idea about agriculture and where food comes from. Farm animals and farm machinery were brought in for the students to see, and discussions about food and agriculture were conducted in the classroom. Published April 20, 1988. Sixth grade students from Franklin School made a field trip to the lagoon at Capaha Park to practice what they learned during a special class about fishing. The Missouri Conservation Department sponsored a Missouri Angler Program in more than 100 schools throughout the state in which students learned about fishing equipment and safety. Some students went fishing for the first time during the program. Published July 16, 1990. Dr. Ed Masters, a Cape Girardeau physician, sat in one of his examining rooms on whose walls hung a copy of a recent magazine article which discussed Lyme disease. Masters was one of the leading experts on the disease. (Mark Sterkel ~ Southeast Missourian archive)

Published Sept. 17, 1987. Alma Schrader School held a special assembly during which the sixth grade did a living portait of the Howard Chandler Christy painting of the signing of the Constitution. (Southeast Missourian archive)

Published March 4, 1987. Cape Girardeau School Superintendent Arthur Turner answered questions from a group of parents attending a public hearing concerning the selection of a new high school principal.
