The Crimson Duke, with its 35-barge tow, made its way up the Mississippi River under the old traffic bridge at Cape Girardeau. The river measured 20.2 feet on the gauge at Cape Girardeau. Above-average rainfall in the upper Midwest had improved navigation conditions on the river compared to a year earlier. But the river, without additional substantial rainfall, was expected to fall below 10 feet by early September 1990. (Southeast Missourian archive)
