Published Oct. 9, 1990. Alma Schrader first-grade students Lauren Hirschburg, Christy Hey and Sarah Slaten prepared for a lofty ride with art teacher Sharon Williams and fireman Mike Morgan on the Cape Girardeau Fire Department's aerial ladder truck platform. Students at all Cape Girardeau public and private schools participated in fire drills as part of National Fire Prevention Week. Poster contest winners received prizes and a ride in the fire truck. Published Sept. 27, 1990. Chaffee, Missouri, police chief Ivan McLain pointed to a portion of a 15-foot-long crack in the rear wall of City Hall, which resulted from a 4.6 magnitude earthquake. (Southeast Missourian archive)

Published Aug. 14, 1990. The Crimson Duke, with its 35-barge tow, made its way up the Mississippi River under the old traffic bridge at Cape Girardeau. The river measured 20.2 feet on the gauge at Cape Girardeau. Above-average rainfall in the upper Midwest had improved navigation conditions on the river compared to a year earlier. But the river, without additional substantial rainfall, was expected to fall below 10 feet by early September 1990. (Southeast Missourian archive)
