Published Sept. 27, 1981. Dave Hale, owner of 5-H Ranch, led a camel ridden by Procter and Gamble Paper Products manager James I. Bowman at the start of the plant's annual run/ride-a-thon Friday. Also on camelback was P&G plant manager Ronald Miller. All types of transportation were used to cover the nine miles between the plant and Trail of Tears State Park to raise money for the Cape Girardeau United Way and Jackson Community Chest. Employees pledged so much a mile for those participating in the event. (Southeast Missourian archive photo)

The three girls were part of a group of Junior Girl Scouts attending day camp in Cape Girardeau this week who were working toward their Indian Lore Badge. Cape Central High School anticipated about 800 students participating in the 1989 District Student Council Convention. The privilege was earned in part by the school's student council members winning the skit competition at the district convention Nov. 12, 1989, in New Madrid. Re-creating their performance were, from left, front row seated: Emily Nall, Carl Froemsdorf, Georgia Bryan, Tasha Garner, Bill Reazer, in chair; Laurie Kelley, Laurie Plaster, Kara Ebaugh and Byron Karathanos.
