Published Dec. 16, 1977. For 17 years, Mrs. Iola Baker has operated Baker's Big Burger, a restaurant at 28 South Spanish, and her retirement this week brought out a group of businessmen from the downtown area, who frequently have their coffee klatches there. They surprised her with a big cake and, with short speeches, expressed their thanks for good restaurant service and wishes for a pleasant retirement. Then, they proceeded to devour the cake, washed down with steaming cups of coffee. Mrs. Baker recently sold the business to Charles Klughart of Scott City, who has taken over its management. Cape Girardeau Central Junior High School eighth-grader Shannon Felker makes a splash in the dunking booth during the Tie' Em Up Tigers Day at the school. Students dyed t-shirts, threw softballs at the dunk tank, played games, and enjoyed refreshments provided by Adopt-A-School partner Saint Francis Medical Center. Gordie Tapp, seated with guitar, and Grandpa Jones, with banjo, provided down-home humor along with other performers, including LuLu Roman, Kenny Price and the Nashville Edition. Thomas Drummond during the ROTC officer commissioning ceremony on the campus of Southeast Missouri State University. Martin, who is about to take his leave from the old people's home. The Cape Girardeau Community Theater formally inaugurated Fine Arts Festival Week in Cape Girardeau with the three-act comedy. Also shown in the picture are characters, Mrs. J.E. (Beulah) Riley and Miss Gladys Lesem, seated at table left; behind them, Mrs. Harry (Wanda) Nicholas; Earl Hazen, Mr. Martin, holding bird cage; Bob Wilcox manipulating wheel chair in which is seated Mrs. Gene (Becky) Van Matre; Bob Ready and Mrs. Don (Sue) McNeely.
