Published June 28, 1993. Cape Girardeau Police Officer Charlie Herbst isn't riding a bike just for pleasure. He's also looking around for suspicious activity while riding a new 21-speed police-issue bicycle. Published May 10, 1983. Bill Logan, left, a bicycle racer who has won the Missouri state championship in racing four times, stands by Eric Gooden, founder of the Velo Girardeau bicycle club which was formed about four years ago. Logan says the area is perfect for a racer for training. "If you go to the south, there is flat terrain, and in the north there are hills. If you go west there is a combination of the two." Published May 19, 1960. This picture of the old Cape Girardeau Northern depot building at Middle and Independence streets doesn't show in detail the dilapidated condition into which the once-fine building has fallen. Glass in the windows is broken; the doors to the basement have been boarded up and the interior is a general mess. In times of excessive rains, water floods the basement. Built nearly 60 years ago by the Houck interests when the Cape Girardeau Northern Railroad was put through, it is now the property of the Missouri Pacific Railroad. (G.D.
