Thousands of eager spectators braved a hot September day Saturday to attend Aviation Day at the Cape Girardeau Municipal Airport. Highlight of the day was an appearance by the Blue Angels, the Navy Flight Demonstration Team. Attendance figures were estimated at more than 15,000. (Fred Lynch ~ Southeast Missourian archive)

The raw end of a felled American elm tree forms an interestingly irregular pattern, complete with growth rings in the trunk. The tree, which was more than 100 years old, was on the east side of Capaha Park and was cut down by Don Freeman, seen in picture. The tree was the victim of Dutch Elm disease. It was only a light bulb that the Southeast Missouri Theater Association (formerly the Jackson Theater) presented to the Jackson Municipal Band Monday night, but it symbolized much more. The association gave the band a gift of new footlights for the bandshell in Jackson City Park in appreciation for the use of the bandshell at events sponsored by the association. From left, Mrs. Leonard Dambach and Carl Penzel, president and vice president of the association, make the presentation to Leroy McNeely and Nick Leist, president and director of the Jackson Municipal Band. Gary Miller opened the dedicatory concert Sunday at First Presbyterian Church with "Messe pour les Convents" by Francois Couperin. Miller, First Presbyterian organist, is also assistant professor of organ and music theory at Southeast Missouri State University.
