Published Sept. 26, 1988. About 100 first graders, members of the high school class of the year 2000, and their parents march down Broadway Sunday in a parade preceding a riverfront ceremony to launch implementation of the Vision 2000 strategic plan for Cape Girardeau. Published Sept. 11, 1983. Thousands of eager spectators braved a hot September day Saturday to attend Aviation Day at the Cape Girardeau Municipal Airport. Highlight of the day was an appearance by the Blue Angels, the Navy Flight Demonstration Team. Attendance figures were estimated at more than 15,000. (Fred Lynch ~ Southeast Missourian archive)

Published Oct. 13, 1978. The raw end of a felled American elm tree forms an interestingly irregular pattern, complete with growth rings in the trunk. The tree, which was more than 100 years old, was on the east side of Capaha Park and was cut down by Don Freeman, seen in picture. The tree was the victim of Dutch Elm disease. Published Aug. 15, 1978. It was only a light bulb that the Southeast Missouri Theater Association (formerly the Jackson Theater) presented to the Jackson Municipal Band Monday night, but it symbolized much more. The association gave the band a gift of new footlights for the bandshell in Jackson City Park in appreciation for the use of the bandshell at events sponsored by the association. Published Nov. 11, 1983. Gary Miller opened the dedicatory concert Sunday at First Presbyterian Church with "Messe pour les Convents" by Francois Couperin. Miller, First Presbyterian organist, is also assistant professor of organ and music theory at Southeast Missouri State University. Published Aug. 3, 1988. David Schwab and his wife, Phyllis, check election results Tuesday evening in Jackson. Schwab defeated Kevin Phillips in the Republican primary for the 158th District state representative seat. He will face Democrat Jack Litzelfelner in November.
