The Memorial Fountain in Common Pleas Courthouse Park in Cape Girardeau was formally re-dedicated Sunday afternoon. Special recognition at the ceremony went to the Cape Girardeau Fire Department. Firefighters in their off-duty hours volunteered their expertise to repair and restore the 71-year-old community landmark. Here, Assistant Fire Chief Eugene Hindman accepts a color portrait of the fountain from Associate Circuit Judge Marybelle Mueller, speaker at the ceremony. The portrait was presented in appreciation for the work of the firemen, and will be displayed at the Fire Department Headquarters. At the right are Mr. and Mrs. R.D. Harrison, whose initial interest in the continuing function and repair of the fountain spurred a community effort toward that end. (Fred Lynch ~ Southeast Missourian archive)

Cape Girardeau Postmaster Mike Keefe looks over some of the tons of bulk advertising mail and federal and state income-tax packets the post office will begin delivering between now and the first of the year. Although the volume of post-Christmas bulk mail is less than that of Christmas mail, Keefe says the sheer weight and size of the bulk mail makes it more difficult and time-consuming to sort and deliver.
