John Hale, 16 months, and his constant companion, J.D. the Superchimp, 17 months, wrestle in Maxine Hale's favorite chair. She and husband Dave operate the 5-H Ranch with about 700 exotic animals north of Cape Girardeau. The chimpanzee came to live with the Hales when he was 4 months old, after he was purchased by them from the Stebbing Royal European Circus in Sarasota, Florida. Dorcas Beussink and Adam DuPerier, both of Jackson, looked at a 1964 Dodge Dart owned by Charles Forester that was on display at Cape Girardeau County Park South. It was one of over 100 cars entered in the Capaha Antique Car Club's annual car show. (Fred Lynch ~ Southeast Missourian archive)

The East Cape County Volunteer Fire Department is proud of the two trucks recently acquired, and showed them off Saturday while the Fire Department Auxiliary held an all-day bake sale at Hanover Lutheran Parish Hall to raise more funds for the firefighting equipment. A number of the volunteers who participate in answering fire calls were present, and are, from left, Ron Cotner, Ivan Heise, Kenny Baker, James Hanks, Arthur Lueder Jr., Norman Goehman, Dwayne Kirchhoff, Jack Mandrelle, J.W. McLain, John Edwards, assistant chief John Mohorc and fire chief Roy Hutchason. (Southeast Missourian archive)

Bill Syler addressed a gathering of about 35 friends and family members who attended his swearing-in as 32nd District circuit judge at the Common Pleas Courthouse. With Syler were his wife, Georganne, and Judge A.J. Seier, who gave the oath to Syler. (Southeast Missourian archive)

Alma Schrader School youngsters enjoy playing "Game of the States" on the map that was recently painted on the school playground by students in a design drafting class at the Cape Girardeau Vocational-Technical School. The map may not be large enough to hold the population of the United States, but it's plenty big enough to hold the "population" of several enthusiastic classes.
