Circuit Judge Bill Syler administered the oath to Sister Mary Jane Jansen at Common Pleas Courthouse, where she became the newest special probation officer of the Cape Girardeau County Juvenile Office. She was a former principal at St. Mary Cathedral School. (Southeast Missourian archive)

The 13 members of the city Charter Commission, charged with the responsibility of drafting a governing charter for the community, were sworn in Monday at Cape Girardeau City Hall. The commissioners are, from left, A.C. "Doc" Brase, George H. Wrape, J. Hugh Logan, Ralph L. Edwards, Thomas M. Meyer (partially obscured), commission chairman Narvol A. Randol, Mayor Howard C. Tooke, Vernon V. Fee, councilman Donald R. Strohmeyer, Dr. Peter Daniel Hilty, Edward E. Calvin, James P. Limbaugh and Paul W. Stehr. The commission will hold its first meeting this week.
