David Diebold inspects one of his Compact Red Haven Dwarf peach trees in his orchard at Benton this morning after the trees were encased in ice to protect them from Monday night's cold temperatures. Diebold said the orchard's irrigation system was turned on at 10:30 p.m. Monday when the forecast still called for temperatures to dip to the middle 20s. By coating the trees with a layer of ice, the blossoms are kept at a temperature of 32 degrees. The actual low temperature Monday night was around 31 degrees. As a result, Diebold said, the spraying of the trees may not have been necessary. (Mark Sterkel ~ Southeast Missourian archive)
