A Cape Girardeau man was seriously injured in a Thursday morning vehicle accident eight miles north of Cape Girardeau on Highway 177.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the 2003 Chevrolet driven by 47-year-old Phillip E. Brethold ran off the road and struck a tree at 6:30 a.m. Brethold was partially ejected through the rear window. He was not wearing a seat belt, the patrol said.

Brethold was taken by ambulance to Saint Francis Medical Center.
