Cape Girardeau firefighters were called to the residence of Harry Rapp at 5 N. Fountain late Monday after fire broke out in a basement room of the one-story brick home.
The fire was reported at 10:13 p.m., after Rapp smelled smoke from an adjoining basement room where he was working.
Firefighters said fire damage appeared to be confined to the southwest corner basement room, but there was extensive smoke damage to the rest of the house.
