Adult Education and Literacy program hosts graduation ceremony

Members of Cape Girardeau's Adult Education and Literacy program held a high school equivalency ceremony recognizing their approximately 330 graduates with certificates. The ceremony took place at 7 p.m. at the Cape Career and Technology Center and former Missouri Representative and current Director of the Missouri Department of Revenue Wayne Wallingford presented the keynote address to the graduates.

Friends and family of the graduates fill the auditorium of the Cape Career and Technology Center on Thursday evening to celebrate the graduate's achievement of obtaining their high school equivalency. The ceremony also recognized individuals who completed the courses necessary to gain U.S. citizenship.

The Adult Education and Learning graduates file into their seats to the applause of their family and friends. Many graduates were unable to attend the ceremony and 30 students were in attendance. 

Southeast Missouri State University student Ella Crader sings the National Anthem before the graduation ceremony begins. Crader also plays saxophone for SEMO's performance band.

Former Missouri State Representative and current Director of Missouri's Department of Revenue Wayne Wallingford give the keynote address to the graduates. Wallingford recounted his time in the Vietnam War and his values that have carried him through his professional life. "You work so hard to climb this figurative mountain and once you reach the top you think you're done," Wallingford said. "But you are not done, this is just the beginning. There will be another mountain, and another one and another after that. That is life. It is not static, meaning motionless, fixed, unmoving. It is meant to to be dynamic."

Each new graduate crossed the stage in cap and gown to receive their certificate of high school equivalency and posed for a picture with the superintendent and director. 

Graduate Sherrae Timmons crosses the stage at the Cape Girardeau Career and Technology Center on Thursday evening after receiving her certificate and is greeted by CTC director Libby Guilliams. Friends and family took pictures of the graduates as they were recognized for their achievement.

The 2022 Adult and Education and Literacy graduates pose for a group photograph at the commencement of the ceremony on Thursday. A reception followed the ceremony including food and drinks.
