Smith participates in Boys State

Zachary Smith

Zachary Gerard Smith, a senior at Notre Dame Regional High School, attended the American Legion Boys State of Missouri from June 15 to 22 on the campus of the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg, Mo. Smith was selected based on his leadership, citizenship, academics and character during his junior year at Notre Dame. Smith, son of Bruce and Terri Smith of Jackson, was sponsored at Boys State by the Knights of Columbus, Father Marquette Council 11205, of Cape Girardeau.

Waggener receives PEO scholarship

Laura Waggener, 2013 graduate of Cape Girardeau Central High School, recently was awarded the Missouri Philanthropic Educational Organization's Chapter B.I. Anniversary Scholarship. Waggener participated in service opportunities at Cape Central, ranging from the annual blood drive to tutoring students through the A+ program. She also helped people in the community through her church and charitable organizations, including the Salvation Army and Special Olympics. Waggener is the daughter of John and Karen Waggener.

Students attend academic program

Four local students attended the Missouri Scholars Academy at the University of Missouri in Columbia, Mo. The students spent time in an intensive classroom setting, studying one of four individually selected subjects: Mathematics, science, social studies and humanities. The students who attended the academy were Will Allen of Jackson Senior High School, son of Mark and Elaine Allen; Jackie Crawford of Cape Central Girardeau High School, daughter of Phil and Jenny Crawford; Katelynn Pensel of Jackson Senior High School, daughter of Rodney and Pam Pensel; and Joshua Vogel of Saxony Lutheran High School, son of Mark and Magdalene Vogel.

Scheibe named to honor roll

Nina Scheibe of Cape Girardeau was named to the University of Kansas spring 2013 Honor Roll. Scheibe is a senior studying bassoon and was named to the honor roll for the university's School of Music. The University of Kansas is in Lawrence, Kan.

Sobti named to dean's list

Sushil Sobti of Cape Girardeau was named to the dean's list at Washington University for the spring 2013 semester. Sobti is enrolled in the university's School of Engineering and Applied Science. To qualify for the dean's list, students in the school must earn a semester grade-point average of 3.6 or above and be enrolled in at least 12 graded units.

Dennington named to president's list

Lessley Dennington, daughter of Dr. Don and Marilee Dennington of Cape Girardeau, was named to the President's List at the University of Alabama for the spring 2013 semester. The President's List recognizes students who earn a 4.0 grade-point average on at least 12 credit hours of work. The University of Alabama is in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

Schafer named to dean's list

Eva Schafer of Cape Girardeau was named to the dean's list at Butler University for the 2013 spring semester. Degree-seeking undergraduate students at Butler who carry at least 12 academic hours in a given semester are eligible for the dean's list in the college in which they are enrolled. Butler University is in Indianapolis.

Busch, Burford graduate from University of Arkansas

Taylor Busch of Cape Girardeau and Nathan Burford of Benton, Mo., received their master's degrees during the 2013 spring graduation ceremonies at the University of Arkansas. Busch and Burford received master's degrees in microelectronics. The University of Arkansas is in Fayetteville, Ark.
