Scholarships

* The Missouri Department of Higher Education will award grants to up to 25 students who are children or spouses of soldiers who were injured or died while serving in the military since Sept. 11, 2001. The Wartime Veterans Survivors Grants were created by the Missouri Legislature in 2008 and funded for the first time in 2010. To be eligible, students must be younger than 25. Grants are limited to the first 25 students who apply. Students who apply after the limit is reached will be placed on a waiting list. Award amounts are based on the tuition of the institution the student will attend, up to the tuition charged at University of Missouri in Columbia. Students may also receive up to $2,000 for room and board and up to $500 for books. The awards are renewable if the student maintains a 2.5 cumulative grade point average.

* Kydle Brown of Jackson, Allison Heinsman of Cape Girardeau and Heather Hileman of Jackson received scholarships at the annual meeting of the Grand Bethel of Missouri, Job's Daughters International. Brown will attend Mineral Area College, Heinsman will attend Southeast Missouri State University, and Hileman attends the University of Missouri in Columbia.

The following graduates of Scott City High School received scholarships:

* Harley Markhart received a scholarship from Trendsetter's School of Cosmetology in Cape Girardeau to major in cosmetology.

n Robert Matheney received the G.I. Bill Scholarship for the U.S. Army.

* Jordan McFall received the Keith Anderson Memorial Scholarship and plans to attend Southeast Missouri State University in the fall.

* Olivia Miles received art scholarships from Memphis College of Art to major in art design.

* Susan Pendergrass received the Kiwanis Scholarship and plans to major in culinary arts at Mineral Area Community College.

* Troy Phegley received a Curator's Scholarship to attend the University of Missouri at Columbia and major in nursing.

* Chelsea Phillips received the SEMO Electric Cooperative scholarship and Farm Bureau Scholarship. Phillips plans to major in elementary education at Southeast Missouri State University.

Honors, achievements

* Sam Sander of Jackson graduated cum laude from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn. He was also named to the dean's list during the spring semester.

* Paige Kiefner, Alicia Petzoldt and Madison Rau, students at Saxony Lutheran High School, were selected to perform in a 100-member choir at the triennial National Lutheran Youth Gathering held at the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans.

* Juan Jaramillo, Luke Phillips and Laura Waggener of Central High School and Aaron Huber and Dustin Parsons of Notre Dame Regional High School attended the Missouri Chamber of Commerce and Industry's Leadership in Practice program in Mexico, Mo.
