Awards/Achievements and Scholarships

The following student has been awarded an award and a scholarship to attend Southeast Missouri State University for the 2013-2014 academic year:

* Samuel Rhodes of Cape Girardeau was awarded the Residence Life Leadership Award and President's Scholarship. Rhodes is the son of Mark and Pam Rhodes, of Cape Girardeau and will graduate from Cape Girardeau Central High School.

Schools win "Battle of the Belt challenge"

Notre Dame Regional High School and Saxony Lutheran High School won gold awards in MoDOT's "Battle of the Belt Challenge." Schools were challenged to set up two surprise seat-belt checks nearby and students were to create 30-second videos about the importance of seat-belt usage. Both schools had 99 percent seat-belt usage and were awarded $500 for seat-belt education programs.

Two students earned honors at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa for the fall semester.

* Lessley Carlson Dennington of Cape Girardeau was named to the president's list.

* Matthew A. Zlokovich of Cape Girardeau was named to the dean's list. He is the son of Neil and Martha Zlokovich.

Citizens Electric to sponsor essay contest

Citizens Electric Corporation is sponsoring four students on all-expenses-paid trips to Washington, D.C., and Jefferson City, Mo., this summer to winners of its essay contest. To enter, participants must complete an application and write an essay of 500 to 750 words on the topic: "What steps would you take to make your home more energy efficient, and how would you educate your parents about the benefits?"

Completed applications and essays can be submitted by email at citizens@cecmo.com or delivered to the Citizens Electric offices at 150 Merchant St., Ste. Genevieve, Mo. or 123 N.
