The Mineral Area College Foundation recently announced Carla Lay of Fredericktown, Mo., will be the recipient of the 2014 Rose Abbott Nursing Scholarship. Lay is a second-year student in MAC's nursing program. The Rose Abbott Nursing Scholarship is awarded in the honor of Abbott, who died in 2002 after a 47-year nursing career in Southeast Missouri and northeast Arkansas where she worked in several nursing capacities.
Kirk Comstock of Sikeston, Mo., has been selected to the spring 2014 class of Emerging Leaders at Southeast Missouri State University, according to a news release. Comstock is a computer information systems major at Southeast, the release said. Emerging Leaders is a spring semester, University-sponsored student leadership program designed to further the development of the university's future leaders by refining their current leadership abilities and instilling in them a commitment to the campus and community, the release said. The program is open to first-year and second-year students interested in developing their leadership skills and connecting with other students. Topics such as communication, diversity, time management and professionalism are covered, the release said. Participants are required to attend eight educational sessions and a weekend retreat, and complete a project in which they apply their leadership skills, the release said. Emerging Leaders are selected based on good academic and disciplinary standing with less than 60 credit hours, the release said. Students participate in an interview and are selected based on leadership experience and potential, involvement, service and motivation, the release said.
Two local residents, Celeste Bolen of Jackson and Kelsey Martin of Cape Girardeau, recently returned from a three-month semester studying in Asia and Australia at Harding University in Australasia, a news release said. As part of the HUA curriculum, students spent the semester immersed in Australian and Asian culture. Students had the opportunity to experience Tokyo, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Australia and New Zealand, cultivating new relationships with fellow students, the release said.
