Two scholarships -- the Shelton and Glenda Smith Trust Education Scholarship and the Jack and Pauline Bess Scholarship -- have been established through the Southeast Missouri University Foundation.
The Smiths of St. Louis and the Besses of Cape Girardeau each made a $10,000 gift to the foundation to establish the scholarships. Each of the gifts will be matched with an additional $10,000 through a university matching gift program. The program is part of the Honoring Tradition -- Inspiring Success Comprehensive Campaign through the Southeast Missouri University Foundation. The program allows donors to make a minimum commitment of $5,000 to a maximum commitment of $10,000 through donation or pledge by March 1, that will qualify for a $1-for-$1 match. The goal of the campaign is to raise $40 million for student scholarships, academic programs and renovations.
The renewable Smith scholarship will be awarded to a junior or senior education major at Southeast.
Shelton Smith is 1967 graduate of Southeast.
The renewable Bess scholarship will be awarded to a student from Puxico, Mo., who is enrolled at Southeast and majoring in agriculture, business or in the College of Health and Human Services. Second preference will be given to students from Stoddard County with one of these majors, and third preference to students from the university's service region with major is one of the disciplines. Students must have a minimum 2.0 grade-point average. The University scholarship committee will select the recipient.
