Steve Duniphan traveled to Nashville, Tennessee, recently to see Neil Young in concert. Steve says Neil has a Missouri connection in that he plays on a new album Kennett, Missouri, native Sheryl Crow is recording. She was quoted as saying that his doing so was one of the greatest moments of her life. Most of us are familiar with Mr. Young's music, his talent and the influence he has had on the musical world and the world itself. Every once in a while, one can catch Steve at his late mother's house as he readies it for sale.
St. Louis Blues fans were thrilled with their victory over the Dallas Stars. Even before they won Game 7, a Dallas sports writer said the Blues were the better team. The zoos of the two cities had a bet and the vice president of the Dallas Zoo had to don a Blues shirt and pick up 250 pounds of elephant droppings. St. Louis sent a consolation prize of custard.

I am always on the lookout for sheet music, and recently I was surprised to see a piece by the name of "Mr. Sears and Roebuck." The 1949 lyrics are about a girl going through the catalog looking at stoves, tennis rackets and such, and asking Mr. Sears and Roebuck to send the male model, not the item. We all have fun memories of looking through catalogs. When one of my sisters didn't like the punishment she received from our mother, she told me our dad would sit down with her and they would go through the catalog looking for a new mother. One lady recalled how much fun it was to go through it wishing for toys. Christmas catalogs were especially fun and sometimes competitive as to who could tag a toy before their siblings.
Talk of summer vacations and road trips brought back memories for readers. Richard's family moved to Waco, Texas, when he was 3, so they made frequent trips to Oklahoma to see relatives. Richard said they always started their travel day with a big breakfast. En route was a cookie factory, which his dad used as an incentive for Richard, his older sister and two younger brothers to behave. What an action-packed station wagon that had to have been, but Richard's dad maintained order.
My dad settled us down one time on a trip by stopping the car on the roadside to let Carolyn out. With my mother objecting and we girls looking out the back window, he drove off. Several feet ahead, he stopped and backed up so she could get in the car. Of course he would not have left her, and I seriously doubt if she was the perpetrator. His action, however, made four little girls quiet as mice.

Then there was the new ladies' fragrance "Play-Doh" perfume.
