Question: How did you get started in contemporary Christian music?
Answer: It began in my living room in the summer of 2006. My husband, Zak, and I teamed up with a musician friend and began writing music. I have been leading worship for about 10 years, however.
Q: How long have you been a member of your faith?
A: I asked Jesus into my heart when I was 8 years old. So, I suppose that's about 24 years.
Q: As a songwriter, tell us how the process works for you.
A: It usually starts with an idea that comes to me while living life. I jot it down and later pick up a guitar or sit down at the piano and begin messing around with it. Sometimes I take the idea to a co-writing session. I have a little recorder on my phone that is full of various ideas -- it would be quite embarrassing if anyone were to ever go through that thing.
Q: What's your favorite Bible verse and why?
A: Romans 8:38-39, New International Version (NIV): "For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord."
Q: How would you describe your performances?
A: I would say they're honest. They're sincere.   They're me. Not perfect or over-produced. I like to laugh and engage with the audience if they're willing. You can expect a girl and her guitar [and sometimes her husband] singin' her heart out about life, love, God and everything in between!
Q: As a worship leader, what's your advice to church musicians?
A: Pursue excellence in your craft, and leave your ego at home.
Q: What artists in the industry have influenced you?
A: I honestly don't listen to a lot of CCM music. I love folk/Americana stuff -- like The Civil Wars, Mumford & Sons, Lumineers and the like.
Q: When you perform, what do you hope audiences take away from the concert?
A: I want my listeners to feel validated and related to. I want them to walk away feeling joy and that they're not alone. I want them to feel like they know me, that they made a new friend.
