While strolling, I wondered whatever happened to Shirley Patton.

Our congratulations to new parents Brent M. Hulshof and Bailey Grace Howard on the birth of their identical twin daughters Ashley Elizabeth and Sophia Grace. The twins were born June 11 and early at only 27 weeks. They have been at the Cardinal Glennon Hospital in St. Louis since birth and are doing well. The very proud grandparents are Wesley and Sheila Howard of Chaffee and Michael and Sandra Hulshof of Oran. All are thankful for your many prayers.
Lots of food and fun will be had at Frisco Park for Friday and Saturday's German Days.
The Senior Center is holding its all-you-can-eat catfish dinner from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday. Cost is $9 or $5 by the plate. The fish fry is a major fundraiser for its homebound meal program.
Remember when cake mix commercials aired, particularly during soap operas? Back in the day, cake was a regular dessert item, especially on Sundays. Lots of birthday cake being served this month, and there is a Duke mayonnaise commercial featuring a chocolate layer cake that even looks yummy to me, non-chocolate lover that I am.
Vacations and camp have come and gone and school days are here. The first day at Chaffee schools is this Thursday, the 13th.
Elvis Week is ongoing in Memphis through next Sunday. Let us know if any of you make the trip. The new commemorative Elvis Forever stamp goes on sale midweek. I recently added "Are You Lonesome Tonight?" to my sheet music collection. Words and music by Roy Turk and Lou Handman, featuring Sophie Tucker; copyright 1927 by Irving Berlin. There are two verses and the chorus, which has been popular all these years along with the verse on the back that is spoken by Elvis. What a great find. A beautiful song of Elvis' that has been overlooked for years is "One Pair of Hands." You can find it on YouTube.
The hummingbirds are active, and it is fun to catch one preening amid the sprinkler. Be sure to keep fresh water out for the birds. Even if you don't feed them, you will be amazed how many birds fresh water attracts.
We love our St. Louis Cardinals, but NFL fans are ready for football! Training camp is underway, and it should be an exciting season with all the trades and signings that have occurred. Dallas Cowboy fans were upset with owner Jerry Jones for letting DeMarco Murray and Miles Austin get away to rival Philadelphia. With them, former Rams' quarterback Sam Bradford and others going to the Eagles, coach Chip Kelly is building one heck of a team. Sam and DeMarco were college roommates at Oklahoma.
Ahhhh, autumn. Just saying the word is cooling on these hot summer days. A couple of events are already on the calendar for October. The date for this year's Chaffee High School alumni banquet is Oct. 10 at the VFW Hall. Forms are going out, so if you do not receive yours, call (573) 887-3761 or (573) 887-4210.
That same day, at 10 a.m., the second annual Horseshoes 4 Everyday Heroes Tournament is scheduled at Al Friga's Farm on Highway 77. Call Tina Dohogne, executive Ddirector of RSVP, at (573) 887-3664.
"Thank you" to the person who took the time to compliment Chatters recently in Speak Out. We columnists welcome comments from our readers.
Remember to tell those special people in your life you love them -- those three words mean so very much.
Our thoughts and prayers are with those who are missing loved ones, our homebound, those in hospitals and nursing homes. Email your news and comments to darbuck2@airmail.net or leave a message at 573-887-6430 or 214-207-7839.
Then there was the ESPN anchor who received flak for referring to home plate as home bag.
