Scott City is home to the busy SEMO Port Authority on the Mississippi River, and continues to be a hub of railroad activity. The restored Cotton Belt Railroad caboose that sits on Main Street along the railroad tracks reminds the city of its railroad history.
Scott City is a combination of the towns of Ancell, Fornfelt and Illmo. Ancell and Fornfelt combined to form Scott City in 1960. In 1980, Illmo and Scott City combined and chose Scott City for a name.
Later, the town annexed a two-mile area to the north and developed the Nash Road Industrial Park, which has grown to include more than 20 businesses.
The population as of July 2005 is estimated at 4,584.

The city of Scott City, Mo., is experiencing substantial growth both in industry an residential markets. Presently there are five residential subdivisions in construction or in the design stages. Two new businesses -- one a manufacturing plant; the other an assisted living complex -- are to begin construction within the next three to six months.
The Scott City Public School system is an excellent school with over 1,000 students. The parochial school provides elementary students the religious experience before entering high school and college. Each of these schools are proudly represented in Scott City.
A city of nearly 5,000 residents, Scott City provides the small town atmosphere with the closeness of family and friends evident by the conversations overheard at the grocery store and school functions. The residents are well represented in city government by electing eight council members and one mayor. The future needs of Scott City are always the foremost intent at each council meeting.
