Not only did the Cape Girardeau Roller Girls end with a winning season, but the 4-year-old team raised more than $5,000, which it donated to six local charities.

When established in 2010, the Roller Girls, 7-3, were committed to being a nonprofit organization and to giving back to other nonprofits in the community.

A portion of proceeds from every bout is donated to a local organizations voted on by the team members.

In 2013, the team donated more than $5,000 to local organizations including Big Brothers Big Sisters, Southeast Hospice, Cape Girardeau Parks and Recreation and Safe Harbor Animal Sanctuary.

In addition, league members participated in local events supporting the Special Olympics, SEMO Food Bank, Room For One More and Southeast Hospice.

Jen Rose -- aka Me-Ya Wham -- who serves as team treasurer and vice president, said, "Since the inception of the Cape Girardeau Roller Girls, the league has placed a priority on giving back to the community, and we are proud that in 2013, we continued this tradition by providing our support both through participation in events and monetary donations."
