POPLAR BLUFF, Mo. -- Activities seem to pick up in number exponentially the closer we get to the opening of hunting seasons each spring and fall. This year is no different.
First is a Ducks Unlimited dinner in Poplar Bluff, Mo., at the Brown-Mabry American Legion hall, on Kanell Boulevard this Saturday night. The doors open at 5:30 p.m., and the dinner starts at 7. People can practice or test their shooting skills on the laser shot system. Single membership and dinner is $40. Couples dinner with membership is $60. Sponsor membership with two meals is $200.
The National Wild Turkey Federation will also be having its dinner at the Brown-Mabry American Legion hall on March 10.
On March 12 and 14 at the same location will be the Department of Conservation's spring hunter education course. It is a 10-hour course, and students are required to attend both Monday and Wednesday nights from 5 to 10 p.m. The course is free. Students must be at least 11 years old. Participants should bring sharpened pencils and black ink pens.
Students need to register online through the Department of Conservation website by March 9. Just click into Hunter Education down on the right side of the home page, and then look for a classroom course. Make sure to have Social Security numbers and previously established conservation number handy before attempting to register.
While food is not allowed to be brought in, there will be a short dinner break each evening and food will be available for purchase.
Last is the Southeast Missouri Sportsmen's Association dinner on March 24 at the First Christian Church, at 1601 N. Main St. This dinner helps fund the Kids Fish and Fun Day in May. It will include dinner, entertainment and door prizes for $4.50 per person.
