When the curtain goes up on Notre Dame Regional High School's production of "Anything Goes," Samantha Rellergert will be running the show backstage.
Rellergert, a senior, has been constructing sets and helping backstage throughout high school. In all, she has worked on eight productions.
Rellergert is one of two stage managers directing traffic backstage, where she said she is most comfortable.
"I prefer it," she said. "I just like being backstage."
The 1930s musical features songs by American composer and songwriter Cole Porter. There are several dance numbers, including three tap routines. The comedy, which takes place on a ship, chronicles a stowaway's quest for love.
Rellergert took on the challenge of building the scenery, which began construction in February. She and about 10 other students worked consistently on the weekends, sometimes putting in 12-hour days.
The light blue ship deck has several levels and angled railings. Three other mobile pieces transform the stage into staterooms and a jail cell.
"It's fun to make the scene changes look like magic," Rellergert said.
At dress rehearsal, she said there were some finishing touches left, including portholes and painting details. Fueled by Gummi bears and time, she said the set would be complete by opening night.
"We just need a little bit more time," Rellergert said.
Rellergert will attend Southeast Missouri State University next year. Although undecided on a major, she said she will probably study art or technical theater.
The performances are at 8 p.m. today, Saturday and Sunday in the Notre Dame Regional High School cafetorium.
