Conservatory announces Gold Cup recipients

Keyboards and Kindermusik Conservatory recently announced the 2007 Gold Cup recipients in the National Music Federation of Music Clubs contest, pictured above. Winners of the first gold cup require at least three years of participation. Winners of the second gold cup require at least six years of participation. The third gold cup winner was required to have at least nine years of participation. Gold cup winners and students from Keyboards and Kindermusik Conservatory will play in the May 20 spring recital at First Baptist Church in Cape Girardeau. Jackson student wins state FFA award

Darla Mangels of the Jackson Future Farmers of America chapter was named the state winner of the FFA Equine Science-Entrepreneurship Proficiency Award at the Missouri FFA Convention in Columbia, Mo. She is the daughter of Weston and Sandra Mangels.

Foreign Language Festival winners announced

Area high school students were among the winners at Southeast Missouri State University's annual Foreign Language Festival last month.

Notre Dame Regional High School students Melissa Andersen and Theresa Kiblinger won first and second place, respectively, in the category of French spelling bee level one. Andy McIntyre of Notre Dame won first in French spelling bee advanced level. Niki Cofield of Notre Dame won first in French prose reading level one. James Thompson of Notre Dame won first in French prose reading advanced level.

Perryville High School students Caleb Schaaf, Amanda Greer and Logan Hennemann won first, second and third place, respectively, in German spelling bee level one. Perryville High School students Jill Frasher, Sergey Arkhipov and Sarah Greer won first, second and third place, respectively, in German prose reading level one. Emily Johnson, Alex La Rose and Laura Berkbigler won first, second and third place, respectively, in German prose reading advanced level.

Notre Dame's Keith LeGrand won second and Melissa Sergent of Scott City High School tied for third in Spanish spelling bee level one. Notre Dame's David Westrich and Christy Ha won second and third place, respectively, in Spanish spelling bee advanced level.

Livia Guarda of Scott City High School won first place in Spanish prose reading level one. Notre Dame's Jessica Banda and Fouzia Oza finished second and third, respectively. Notre Dame's Carly Schneider finished first in Spanish prose reading advanced level. Kayli Wibbenmeyer and Julia Schemel, both of St. Vincent de Paul High School in Perryville won second and third place, respectively.

Notre Dame grad elected as student governor

Janelle Essner, a 2004 graduate of Notre Dame Regional High School and daughter of Larry and Betty Essner of Benton, Mo., was recently elected as state student governor for the Missouri chapter of Student Council for Exceptional Children. Essner will attend the national council conference in Boston next year. The Council for Exceptional Children is an international organization dedicated to advocacy for students and adults with special needs. Essner is a member of the student chapter at the University of Missouri-Columbia.

Notre Dame graduates named to honor society

Kaitlyn Scheeter and Jacob Wengert, both 2006 graduates of Notre Dame Regional High School, were inducted into the Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society at Maryville University in St. Louis. Scheeter is the daughter of Vaughn and Toni Scheeter of Cape Girardeau. Wengert is the son of Alan and Kim Wengert of Jackson.

Area students recognized for ACT exam scores

Immaculate Conception School seventh-graders Adam Montgomery and Emily Triller received state recognition on the ACT exam. Both students scored at or above the average for the state of Missouri. Seventh-grade students are offered the opportunity to take the ACT exam through the Duke University Talent Search Program.

Central student receives national award in English

Jenny Huo of Cape Girardeau Central High School was named a United States National Award winner in English by the United States Achievement Academy. The academy recognizes fewer than 10 percent of all American high school students. Huo is the daughter of Min Zou and Haihua Huo of Cape Girardeau.

St. Louis pharmacy college awards scholarships

Heather Tuschhoff and Kremer Rampley, both of Jackson, and Derek Palisch of Altenburg, Mo., received scholarships from the St. Louis College of Pharmacy. Tuschhoff is the daughter of Tim and Bev Tuschhoff and a 2003 graduate of Jackson High School. Rampley, the son of Kevin and Leigh Rampley, is a 2004 Jackson High School graduate. Palisch, the son of James and Tammy Palisch, is a 2003 graduate of Perryville High School.

Extra Credit

Livestock specialist gets honorary degree

Roger Eakins of Jackson was named an honorary state FFA degree recipient at the Missouri FFA Convention in Columbia, Mo. Eakins is a regional livestock specialist for the University of Missouri Extension.
