Area Chemistry Bowl winners announced

High school students competed at the annual Southeast Missouri Chemistry Bowl on March 23 at Southeast Missouri State University. Team winners included St. Vincent High School in Perryville, Mo., which took second place among small schools. Individual winners included St. Vincent High School students: Lisa Abbott, eighth place; Irene Graf, ninth place; Lindsay Sides, 11th place; Alexandra Lundy and Jonathon Buehler, tied for 12th; and Theresa Mattingly, 14th place.

Central orchestra members to tour Europe

Cape Girardeau Central High School orchestra members Stephanie Schaffner, Charlotte Schaffner, Paige Pritchard and Juliana West and orchestra director Steve Schaffner will participate in the Missouri Ambassadors of Music tour of seven European countries from June 15 to June 30. The group will include 200 students and parents as well as 20 Missouri band, choir and orchestra directors who will serve as rehearsal assistants and chaperones.

Agriculture group offers scholarship applications

The Scott County Women in Agriculture organization is offering a $500 scholarship to a 2006 high school graduate. To be eligible for the award, the applicant or applicant's family must be involved in farming or agribusiness in Scott County. The applicant doesn't have to major in agriculture. The deadline for applying is April 1. Applications are available from counselors at Scott County high schools or at the Scott County Soil and Water Service office in Benton, Mo.

Middle school student a winnner in story contest

Steven Meyer, a sixth-grader at Central Middle School, was one of 10 winners nationwide in Scholastic's Storyworks "Killer Croc" contest. Storyworks liked his sentence on why Gustave, the killer crocodile, eats people. "Gustave eats people because humans gave him no choice." Steven, son of Gail and Allan Meyer, received a copy of "Cryptid Hunters" as a prize.

• Austin Critchlow, son of Dr. Jan Seabaugh and Dr. Tom Critchlow of Cape Girardeau, was named to the dean's list at St. Louis University John Cook School of Business for the 2005 fall semester.

• Lisa Langenfeld, a Cape Girardeau Central High School student, has been named a United States National Award winner in English. She is the daughter of Mark and Kathy Langenfeld of Cape Girardeau.

* Emily Bira of Cape Girardeau was inducted into the honors program at Rockhurst University in Kansas City, Mo.

* Cape Girardeau Central High School senior Catherine Moreton, daughter of John and Nancy Moreton, has been selected for the 2006 Missouri Scholars 100, a statewide program that honors 100 of the state's top academic students in this year's graduating class.

• Austin Bock of Gordonville and Matthew Bollinger and Douglas Ludwig, both of Jackson, have received college scholarships from the Missouri Cattlemen Foundation.

* Brandon Holzum of Cape Girardeau, a senior at Notre Dame Regional High School, was one of eight Missouri students awarded the Elks National Foundation's Most Valuable Student scholarship at the group's state convention on March 18 in Jefferson City.

* Alisha Haman, Amber Nistendirk and Julie Burnette, all of Cape Girardeau, and Tyler Boyd of Jackson have been awarded Missouri Assessment Program scholarships to attend Southeast Missouri State University for the 2006-2007 academic year.

Nathan Litchfield of Jackson and Rebecca Wheetley of Scott City both have been awarded President's scholarships and Missouri Assessment Program scholarships to attend Southeast Missouri State University for the 2006-2007 academic year. Litchfield, the son of Timothy and Debbie Litchfield of Jackson, is a senior at Jackson High School. Wheetley, the daughter of James and Lyn Fortner of Scott City, is a senior at Scott City High School.

* Danielle Hoffman and Erica Bock, both of Jackson; Tanya Lambert, Allison Dohogne, Carrie Lasky, Anne Peel, Robert Kaverman, all of Cape Girardeau; and Kami Miinch of Millersville have received Regents' scholarships and Missouri Assessment Program scholarships to attend Southeast Missouri State University for the 2006-2007 academic year.

Hoffman, daughter of A.D. and Judy Hoffman of Jackson, and Bock, daughter of Mark Bock of Jackson and Vickie Rinehart of Dexter, Mo., are seniors at Jackson High School.

Lambert, daughter of Penny and Randy Ross of Cape Girardeau, is a senior at Jackson High School.

Dohogne, Lasky, Peel and Kaverman attend Cape Central High School. Dohogne is the daughter of Pat and Lisa Dohogne. Lasky is the daughter of Richard and Debbie Lasky. Peel is the daughter of Steven and Laura Peel. Kaverman is the son of Don and Sue Kaverman.

Miinch, who attends Jackson High School, is the daughter of Dwane and Diane Miinch of Millersville.

Eric Farrow of Cape Girardeau has been awarded a Boy's State Leadership Award to attend Southeast Missouri State University for the 2006-2007 academic year.

Bethany Steffens of Frohna, Mo., has been awarded a Missouri Leadership Award and a Missouri Assessment Program Scholarship to attend Southeast Missouri State University for the 2006-2007 academic year. Steffens, a student at Perryville High School, is the daughter of Vaughn and Colleen Steffens of Frohna.

Several teachers were honored at the Southeast Missouri District Business Educators meeting on March 16 at Southeast Missouri State University. Darlene Davis of Poplar Bluff High School was recognized for her work as president for the past year. Nancy Reisenbichler, who is retiring from Perryville High School, was recognized for her service to business education at the state and district level. Roger McMillian from Mineral Area College was named Outstanding Business Educator in the region for 2006.
