Cape Girardeau woman named to president's list

Kari Bragg of Cape Girardeau has been named to the president's list for the fall semester at Freed-Hardeman University in Henderson, Ky.

Cape Girardeau native graduates with honors

Cape Girardeau native Lonette "Lonnie" Hayden Piper received her master of business administration degree from Oklahoma City University in a commencement ceremony in December. She graduated with high honors with a 4.0 grade point average.

St. Vincent students named All-District

Four St. Vincent High School students -- senior Chris Fischer, junior Zach Fischer, sophomore Joel Fischer and sophomore Jason Carron -- were named to the All-District Jazz and Concert Band after competition in Jackson. Joel Fischer received second chair all-state band alto saxophone honorable mention at auditions for the All-State Band in Columbia, Mo., last month. The Fischers are the sons of Bill Fischer and the late Kathy Fischer. Carron is the son of Dr. and Mrs. Stephen Carron.

Extra Credit

  • Jim Glastetter has retired after teaching science classes at Notre Dame Regional High School for more than 37 years. Glastetter, who taught everything from biology to physics, retired at the end of the fall semester.
  • Dr. Mitchel Gerber, political science professor at Southeast Missouri State University, has been awarded the Starkoff Fellowship for the 2006 to 2007 academic year. The fellowship is presented by the Jacob Rader Marcus Center of the American Jewish Archives in Cincinnati. Gerber will conduct scholarly research during a four-week stay at the center next summer. Gerber says his study will focus on disparate interpretations of genocide and human rights.

School News

  • The Jackson School District will enroll kindergarten students for the 2007 to 2008 school year from 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Jan. 25 at South Elementary School at 1701 S. Hope St. Children must turn 5 years of age before Aug. 1 to be eligible for kindergarten. Parents or guardians should bring with them the child's birth certificate, immunization record, Social Security card and proof of residency. The child doesn't need to be present at enrollment, school officials said.
