The "Defiant Child" program scheduled for July 27 at Southeast Hospital has been canceled.

Children's health issues program scheduled

The 10th annual seminar on health issues of the school-age child will be held Aug. 8 at Southeast Missouri Hospital's Generations Family Resource Center. The seminar is open to school nurses, teachers, counselors, school administrators and education and nursing students. It will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the hospital's Harrison Room. The program is approved for 5.3 contact hours for nurses through the Missouri Nurses Association. Registration deadline is Aug. 3. Seminar topics are: "Methods Used to Identify an Impaired Person," by Sgt. Barry Hovis and patrolman Gary Burchell of the Cape Girardeau Police Department; "How to Recognize Child Abuse and Neglect," by Karen Blattner and Frances Hemphill of Southeast Missouri Hospital; "The ABCs of Autism," by Dr. David Walsh of Cardinal Glennon Children's Medical Center in St. Louis; "Implementing Change for a Healthy School Environment," By Debbie Leoni, manager of Southeast's Wellness Services; and "Self Defense 101," by Doug Johnson, martial arts instructor. Weight loss surgery support group to meet

Individuals who are considering weight-reduction surgery or those who have had surgery are invited to take part in a weight loss surgery support group from 10 a.m. to noon Aug. 12 in the Generations Center at Southeast Missouri Hospital. Participants will share their best weight loss strategies, and nutritional product samples will be distributed. For more information, contact Joni Adams Bliss at 651-5533.

Neurosurgeon to talk about surgery options

Dr. Scott Gibbs, a neurosurgeon with the Brain and NeuroSpine Clinic of Missouri, will present a free program called "Back Surgery: When is it the Right Choice?" from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Aug. 8 at Southeast Missouri Hospital's Harrison Room. Gibbs will discuss artificial disk replacement, no-hospitalization/band-aid microdiscectomy and other minimally-invasive techniques. To register, call 651-5825.

Camp DAY Break for diabetic children

Children ages 6 to 13 who have diabetes are invited to attend Camp DAY (Diabetes and Youth) Break, a two-day camp Aug. 3 and 4 sponsored by Southeast Missouri Hospital and the Southeast Area Chapter of the American Diabetes Association. The camp will be held at the Main Street Fitness Center in Jackson and in Jackson City Park. Financial scholarships are available. For information, call 651-5844.

Saint Francis program receives accreditation

Saint Francis Medical Center has been awarded a three-year term of accreditation in digital mammography by the American College of Radiology (ACR). Saint Francis' Womancare is leading the way as the area's first facility to provide digital mammography -- a system in which X-ray film is replaced by digital images viewed on a computer screen or printed film to look like regular mammograms.

Program reaccredited with commendation

Saint Francis Medical Center's cancer program has received the American College of Surgeons' Commission on Cancer's three-year reaccreditation with commendation. Saint Francis Medical Center's Cancer Institute offers comprehensive cancer care for patients throughout the five-state region. The ACR is a national organization serving more than 32,000 diagnostic-interventional radiologists, radiation oncologists and nuclear medicine and medical physicists.
