While eating lunch at a local restaurant, Sherri Brethold, Southeast Missouri Chapter American Red Cross health and safety director, assisted a gentleman who needed medical help. The man was having difficulty standing and was disoriented. The wait staff became alarmed and called 911, but could not convey the situation. Brethold intervened and talked to the 911 first responders with her assessment of the man's problem. Brethold had the man lay still until the ambulance could arrive. Upon arrival, medical personnel determined the man had suffered a stroke. Amanda Lincoln, who was with Brethold at the restaurant, said, "She did what she was trained to do. She responded quickly and with confidence. She truly embodies the spirit of the Red Cross and although she thinks her actions were just 'normal,' her quick thinking, observant nature and caring and professional manner likely saved, or will greatly impact this gentleman's life."
