Jerry Hampton of Cape Girardeau, a Scoutmaster with 40 years in Scouting, retired in 2005. He's always liked instilling the Scouting principles, so he continued as Assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 5, Cape Girardeau. Weekend campouts, special activities, and troop time can come to 100 hours monthly according to Hampton. Recently he began helping with the start up of a new Scout Troop, no. 215, and was given the title of assistant district commissioner from the local Scout office. He will guide one or more troops as a result. Hampton calculated that the 175 boys who advanced to Eagle Scout in his time, gave back about 20,000 to 25,000 hours of community service. Hampton also volunteers at the Elks Lodge and Missouri Veterans Home.
