The Missouri Bluebird Society recently presented the Federated Garden Clubs of Missouri with a Bluebird Conservation Award, according to a news release from the club organization's president, Nancy Bahn of Jackson. The award recognizes the club's history, dating to 1942, when a garden club in Kirkwood, Missouri, had visions of extending a bluebird trail that was begun in Cape Girardeau in 1938 by Mrs. Oscar Findley, leader of the Junior Audubon Club, which had erected a chain of bluebird houses around Cape Girardeau on Cape Rock Drive. That eventually led to Missouri Bluebird Trail, overseen by the Missouri garden clubs group, and the National Bluebird Trail, which was formally dedicated in 1945. Those interested in establishing a bluebird trail or bluebird sanctuary are encouraged to contact a member of local garden clubs -- Ramblewood, Rose Hills or Four Seasons. More information about the history of the trail is available at missouribluebird.org.
