Dinner to kick off Cape County Relay for Life

The annual Relay for Life of Cape Girardeau County Cancer Survivors' Dinner, hosted by the American Cancer Society, will be at 6 p.m. June 2 at the Jackson Knights of Columbus Hall. Mike Metzger and US Foods are donating the food, which will be prepared by members of Jackson Knights of Columbus Council 6405. The event includes entertainment and speaker Dr. Joseph P. Miller of the SoutheastHEALTH Cancer Center. Registration for the dinner is limited; cancer survivors, each of whom may bring a guest, are asked to make reservations by Wednesday. Volunteer reading tutors sought

United Way of Southeast Missouri is recruiting volunteer tutors for the summer Read to Succeed program. The reading acceleration program helps students enhance reading and comprehension skills. Tutoring will take place at the Cape Public Library between June 1 and Aug. 1. A tutor will be matched with a student entering first or second grade, and will meet with the student and the student's parent or older sibling for 30 minutes per week, or more if desired, for the duration of the program. Stroke screening scheduled Thursday

Saint Francis Medical Center is offering a free stroke screening from 7 to 11 a.m. Thursday in the Saint Francis Conference Center, Entrance 8. More information and reservations are available by calling 573-331-3996.

Heart and health screenings May 20

The third Wednesday of each month -- from 7 to 10 a.m. -- Saint Francis hospital offers health screenings. Screenings take place in the Health and Wellness Center, Entrance 8. For more information is available by calling 573-331-5970.

  • Heart screening includes lipid profile plus glucose for $29 and it includes tests for total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, triglycerides, cardio risk ratio plus glucose for diabetes.
  • Blood pressure screening is free.
  • Glucose screening is $6.
  • Women's osteoporosis screening is $25.

Medical center junior volunteer orientations set

Orientation sessions for the junior volunteer program, June 2 through 25 at Saint Francis Medical Center, will be from 8:45 to 11:15 a.m. May 22 and 2:15 to 4:30 p.m. May 27. Attending one of the orientation events is mandatory before participating in volunteer service. Volunteers must be at least 14 years old. Sessions are held in the South Healing Arts Conference Room via Entrance 2. Registration is available at the medical center's volunteer office or by calling 573-331-5166, Applications are due back Friday.

Medical center auxiliary bake sale May 27

The Saint Francis Medical Center Auxiliary will host a bake sale at 8 a.m. May 27 in the center's Healing Arts Lobby, entrance 2.

Playhouse to host superhero summer event

Discovery Playhouse will host a summer kickoff party from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the playhouse, 502 Broadway in Cape Girardeau. Parents and children are encouraged to dress as superheros. The event will include games, arts and crafts, an obstacle course, hotdogs, popcorn and drinks. Local police officers and firefighters are invited to answer children's questions. Cost is $10 per person; registration is required, and space is limited. More information is available by calling 573-335-7529.

Furry 5K run scheduled June 6

Fitness Plus will host the Furry 5K run and one-mile walk June 6 at Missouri Running Co., 1720 Kingsway Drive. Race day registration is from 7 to 7:45 a.m., and the race begins at 8 a.m. A portion of the $20 registration fee will benefit Saint Francis Medical Center's Inpatient Rehabilitation pet therapy program. While participants are invited to bring a furry friend, dogs are not required for participation. Registration forms may be completed at the Fitness Plus Service Desk, Missouri Running Co., or online at furry5k2015.eventbrite.com. Participants registered by May 21 are guaranteed a T-shirt and dog neckerchief. Participants who register after May 21 must pay a $25 registration fee. Blood donation opportunities scheduled

The American Red Cross asks eligible donors to help ensure blood is available for patients in need by giving blood in May before the busy summer season. Donors of all blood types -- especially those with types O negative, A negative and B negative -- are needed. Those who come to donate blood between May 23 and May 25 will receive a limited-edition Red Cross-branded RuMe*® tote bag, while supplies last.
