The menu for the Salvation Army's Meals with Friends, served at noon daily at 701 Good Hope St., for the week is as follows:

  • Tuesday: Baked chicken, stuffing, mac and cheese and dessert.
  • Wednesday: Ham, mashed potatoes, corn, fruit, dessert and bread.
  • Thursday: Mostaccioli, green beans, fruit, dessert and rolls.
  • Friday: Leftovers

Kow Pasture Klassic set Saturday

The 30th annual Kow Pasture Klassic, with proceeds benefiting the Missouri Veterans Home and the Kenny Rogers Children's Center, will be 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday behind Schindler's Tavern and St. Lawrence Church in Benton. Entry fee is $100 for a team of four people. Colors will be posted by the Marine Corps League at noon at the Avenue of Flags. More information is available by calling 573-545-3709 or 573-243-3931.

Feminism discussion at library

A discussion -- "Feminism and the Counter Culture: Two Women's Firsthand Experience and Where We Go From Here" -- will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday in the Oscar Hirsch Room of the Cape Girardeau Public Library. Filmmaker Sandra Pfeifer and educator Carole Brown will provide a transmedia presentation about the history and future of feminism. Jackson Park Day is Saturday

Jackson Park Day, a community clean-up day, will be Saturday, starting at 8 a.m. at shelter No. 1 on Parkview Street in the Main City Park. Participants will be offered a free T-shirt and free lunch at 11. Individuals and service groups are welcome. Scott City kindergarten registration set

Scott City School District kindergarten registration will be May 7 at the elementary school. To be eligible for enrollment, children must be 5 years old on or before Aug. 1. The child does not have to be present at registration, which will take about one hour and will include setting of appointments for kindergarten screening, to be held May 12. Parents must call 573-264-2131 to make an appointment and must bring proof of residency dated within the last 30 days, record of immunizations, birth certification, photo identification of parent or guardian and guardianship papers or custody decree if applicable.

Benefit concert at Old St. Vincent Church

A concert to benefit the St. Mary Cathedral and Old St. Vincent Catholic Church food pantry will be at 2 p.m. April 26 at Old St. Vincent Church in Cape Girardeau. Monetary and food donations will be accepted. The concert, sponsored by the Knights of Columbus, will include performances by J& J Folkgrass Project, Priya and the Prayer, Randy and Gaye Auxier, Barefoot on Sunday and the Gordons.

Salvation Army schedules annual dinner

The Salvation Army's annual community appreciation dinner -- with the theme "A Night Under the Stars" -- will be at 6 p.m. May 12 at its headquarters, 701 Good Hope St. Blend, an a cappella musical group, will perform. Cost of the dinner is $10, which includes a meal and the entertainment. More information is available by calling 573-335-7000.

St. John's Lutheran Church to host blessing of the bikes

St. John's Lutheran Church, 158 Little St. in Pocahontas, Missouri, on May 17 will host a blessing of the bikes event, Sunday, May 17. Events include a worship service at 10 a.m., a general blessing of the bikes at 11 a.m., followed by individual blessings, a free lunch, raffles and prizes.

Bikers and non-bikers are welcome.

Women in Agriculture contest open

Applications are being accepted for the third annual Missouri Woman in Agriculture Contest, hosted by the Missouri State Fair to honor the contributions women make to the state's leading industry. The title will be awarded in two age divisions, with each winner receiving a $1,000 donation from Monsanto for a not-for-profit, agriculture-related cause of her choice.

Contest applications and rules are available online at mostatefair.com/ag-contest, with entries being accepted through June 5. Interested applicants can also receive a copy of the documents in the mail, by calling the Fair at 800-422-3247. Women ages 31 and older will be eligible for the Missouri Woman in Agriculture Award, and women 18 to 30 will be eligible for the Missouri Woman in Agriculture Rising Star Award.
