Fall book sale starts Friday at Cape Girardeau library

The Friends of the Cape Girardeau Public Library Foundation will hold its annual fall book sale Friday through Sunday. The hours are 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, 8 to 5 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday. Friends members are invited to a special preview hour from 5 to 6 p.m. Friday. Anyone may join the Friends Foundation at the door for a minimum of $15. Hundreds of items will be available for purchase including hardcover books for $1 each, paperbacks for 50 cents and books-on-tape and videos for $2. All proceeds go to benefit special library projects sponsored by the Friends Foundation.

Free conference for caregivers to be held in late September

The not-for-profit National Private Duty Association will host a conference titled "Addressing Legal Issues that Impact Seniors" at 7 p.m. Sept. 22. The live and interactive program will provide advice on elder law matters, including pinpointing when you need to address legal issues, what the implications are and how to ensure that participants and their families are protected. Program to ease seniors' concerns about falling down

"A Matter of Balance: Managing Concerns About Falls" was designed to reduce the fear of falling and increase activity levels among older adults. Participants learn to set realistic goals to increase activity, change their environment to reduce fall risk factors and learn simple exercises to increase strength and balance. MU Extension is offering "A Matter of Balance: Managing Concerns About Falls" on Oct. 3, 10, 17, 24, 31, and Nov. 7, 14, 21. The program cost $25, and a $10 gift card will be given for those who complete the class. A workbook is provided and refreshments are served. Conference to help those raising another's children

A daylong conference will help grandparents and any other relative who are raising someone else's children to access resources. The conference, from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 18 at St. Andrew Lutheran Church, consists of a panel discussion on health issues and concurrent sessions on technology, couponing, legal issues and suicide prevention. It is free.
