The Cape Girardeau Southside Optimist Clubs have organized the second annual Ducks on the Mississippi in conjunction with the 32nd annual River Tales Classic Car Show organized by the River City Rodders. Businesses and people sponsor ducks to be dumped into the Mississippi River at the north end of the river walk and floated down to an established finish line. Biesters, Phillips families hold reunion

On Sept. 20, the Biesters and Phillips families will host a reunion at VFW Lake on 1346 County Road in Cape Girardeau. The event begins at 1 p.m. Guests should bring a covered dish, beverages, table service and lawn chairs. For more information, call Millice Fluegge at 243-1751.

Oliver House hosts ice cream social

The Jackson Heritage Association will host an ice cream social from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Sept. 13 at the Oliver House in Jackson. Refreshments, including cookies and ice cream, will be provided. Take a tour of the Oliver House, a Jackson historical landmark. Young and old will delight in the Victorian period furnishings and the chance to experience history. At 1:30 p.m., historian Dr. Frank Nickell will be giving a talk about Missouri history. The ice cream social is free and open to the public. The Oliver House is at 224 East Adams St.

Fish fry held at First Assembly of God

The Scott City First Assembly of God will be hosting an all-you-can-eat fish fry from 5 to 7 p.m. Sept. 25. The meal includes fried fish, potatoes, baked beans, coleslaw, hush puppies, coffee and tea. The cost for the meal is $8 for adults and $4 for children (ages 6 to 11). Children 5 years old and younger eat free. Carry-outs are available for $8 cash.

Let your poochie take a plunge

The Cape Girardeau Parks and Recreation Department, along with Skyview Animal Clinic and Petco, is holding a Doggy Swim Day. Dogs can swim in the Capaha Municipal Pool from 2 to 4 p.m. Sept. 19. Dogs swim for $5 and there is no charge for their owners. Each registered dog will receive a bandana, dog treats and a dog toy. Participants could also win a $100 gift certificate to Skyview Animal Clinic. All dogs must be vaccinated and closely supervised by their owners during the event. Parks staff will dismiss aggressive animals and their owners.

Half Marathon/5K/Fun Run planned

The Cape Girardeau Road Runners in conjuction with HealthPoint Fitness and River Eagle Distributing will be hosting the 29th annual City of Roses Half Marathon/5K/Fun Run at 7:30 a.m. Sept. 20. The Half Marathon course starts at HealthPoint in Cape Girardeau, winds through downtown Cape Girardeau, past the river murals, under the Bill Emerson Memorial Bridge, near the Southeast Missouri State University River Campus down the Cape LaCroix Creek bike trail, through surrounding neighborhoods and back to HealthPoint Plaza. There are moderate hills on the course. The 5K course will finish at HealthPoint Plaza after looping through the surrounding neighborhoods.
