Local CASA receives grant to expand services

The National CASA Association has announced the funding of an additional volunteer coordinator position for Court Appointed Special Advocates of Southeast Missouri, effective Oct. 1. The grant will allow the local organization to supervise an additional 30 volunteer advocates, who will serve as voices in the juvenile justice system for 30 to 75 more foster child and teen victims of abuse and neglect in Cape Girardeau, Perry and Bollinger counties. The organization trains citizen advocates to gather information about each case to allow the judge to make the most informed decision possible. The CASA volunteer serves as an officer of the court and a part of a family support team, which includes the children's division caseworker, juvenile officer, the attorney for the child, parents and other parties to the case who work together to find permanence for each child. 'The Ultimate Life' at Cape West 14 Cine

An uplifting and inspirational motion picture, "The Ultimate Life," will be presented at Cape West 14 starting Friday. The film has been brought to Cape Girardeau through the efforts of the Southeast Council on Philanthropy. The sequel to "The Ultimate Gift," the film was directed by Michael Landon Jr. and stars Peter Fonda, and will have at least a one-week run at Cape West 14 Cine depending on attendance. Showtimes for the film are 11 a.m., 1:35 p.m., 4:10 p.m., 7 p.m. and 9:35 p.m. A private showing of the film is scheduled Thursday, and details of that event have yet to be finalized. Community service at Maple United Methodist

Maple United Methodist Church will participate in a United Methodist statewide weekend of community service on Friday and Saturday. Maple UMC mission servants will begin participation at 9 a.m. Friday at the SEMO Food Bank, where they will fill backpacks with food for school children in need. Maple UMC also will host a blood drive in the Fellowship Hall from 2 to 6 p.m.; refreshments will be served. A breakfast at 7:30 a.m. will kick off Saturday events, followed by mission participants leaving for different projects at 8:30 a.m. A free carwash by teens of the church will be from 8:30 a.m. to noon at Maple UMC's Fellowship Hall; donations to Imagine No Malaria, the United Methodist Church's program to fight malaria in Africa, will be accepted. Living with chronic conditions workshop

A workshop, Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions, will be from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Saint Francis Health and Wellness Conference Room 3. The workshop will be held every Tuesday through Oct. 1, and it is an effective self-management education program for people with chronic health problems. The program specifically addresses arthritis, diabetes, and lung and heart disease, and teaches skills useful for managing a variety of chronic diseases. Bosom Buddies support group

St. Joseph Catholic Church fall dinner

The St. Joseph Catholic Church Annual Fall Dinner will be from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Sept. 8 in the St. Joseph School Gym. The buffet-style menu will include items such as kettle beef, chicken and dumplings and chicken and dressing with dessert, tea and coffee. Bariatric Support Group

Kickball Tournament and Bar-B-Que at New McKendree United Methodist Church

A kickball tournament and bar-b-que to benefit the American Heart Association is scheduled for 9 a.m. Sept. 28 at New McKendree United Methodist Church in Jackson. The 9 a.m. starting time is subject to change. The event will consist of teams of 8 to 10 people that can enter at $10 per person. Teams can also enter the creative uniform contest for an additional $20 per team. The tournament will be single elimination and trophies will be awarded for first and second place.
