A $120,000 bequest from the estate of the late Dr. F. Gregory Dickey has paved the way for the establishment of two new endowed scholarships through the Southeast Missouri University Foundation, according to a recent news release.
The two new scholarships, each funded at $30,000, are the Tom Doherty Endowed Scholarship and the J.C. Brandt Endowed Scholarship. Both will be awarded next year.
The renewable Tom Doherty Endowed Scholarship will be awarded to a full-time student enrolled at Southeast Missouri State University majoring in history with an overall minimum 2.0 grade point average and with a minimum 3.0 grade point average in history. The Department of History Scholarship Committee will select the recipient. Doherty taught at the former Southeast Missouri State College in the Department of History from 1919 to 1956.
The renewable J.C. Brandt Endowed Scholarship will be awarded to a full-time Southeast student majoring in music with an overall minimum 2.0 grade point average and with a minimum 3.5 grade point average in music. First preference will go to a keyboard, piano or organ major. The Department of Music Scholarship Committee will select the recipient. Brandt served in the Southeast Department of Music from 1919 to 1956.
In addition, the bequest added $30,000 each to two previously established scholarships -- the Helen Cleaver Endowed Scholarship and a scholarship in Dickey's name, the F. Gregory Dickey Endowed Scholarship.
The Helen Cleaver Endowed Scholarship is awarded to foreign language student with an overall minimum grade point average of 2.0 and a major minimum grade point average of 3.0. The funds may be applied toward tuition or study abroad. Cleaver taught at Southeast from 1933 to 1973.
The F. Gregory Dickey Endowed Scholarship is awarded to a full-time Southeast graduate majoring in counseling with an overall minimum grade point average of 3.5.
The Doherty, Brandt and Cleaver scholarships were established by Dickey to honor three Southeast faculty members who taught during his years as a Southeast student. Dickey was a 1951 graduate of Southeast with a Bachelor of Arts with majors in English and history and a 1956 graduate with Bachelor of Science in Education, secondary education, with majors in English and history. Dickey was a professor emeritus of educational administration and counseling, having taught at Southeast from 1966 to 1988. He died in 2017.
