Retired Maj. Ralph Stoney Bates of Greenville, S.C., is seeking short stories for an anthology that will be published and distributed nationally next year. Tentatively titled "Short Rations: Ready-to-Read Stories from the Battlefield and the Homefront of United States Marines." The deadline for submitting a story is Oct. 1, and a $25 entry fee goes toward publication costs, distribution and donations to the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation and the Wounded Warrior Project. Each selected contributor will receive two copies of the book and will be able to obtain additional copies at a discount price. Contributions are also accepted. Mail typed stories to Short Rations, c/o Maj. Ralph Bates, P.O. Box 26196, Greenville, SC 29616. Make a check or money order payable to Short Rations. Warchild Riding Group is hosting its annual Veterans Carnival Run. Participants may either run, walk, ride a bike or drive a car. All donations raised will benefit the Missouri Veterans Home entertainment fund. The ride will begin at 10 a.m. Sept. 22 at the Cape Girardeau VFW and end at Sandy's Toddle Inn in Chaffee, Mo. New Life Gospel Center will hold its 52nd anniversary services today at 401 Oak Street in Scott City. Morning service is at 11 a.m., with pastor Jack Owens speaking. Evening service is at 6:30 p.m., with special guest speaker pastor Ken Strong of Father's Arms Fellowship.
The Girl Scouts will be holding a fundraiser for Levi's Adventure Trail, a future exhibit at the Discovery Playhouse in Cape Girardeau, on Tuesday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Benton, Mo., McDonalds. McDonalds is donating 10 percent of proceeds to Levi's Adventure Trail. T-shirts and wristbands will be on sale, and face painting will also be available.
