Downtown Daze in Oran

The First Downtown Daze in Oran, Mo., is scheduled for Aug. 23 and 24. The event will feature games, bounce houses, arts and crafts, food, music, a talent contest and three beauty pageants. The Junior Miss Oran pageant, scheduled for 7 p.m. Aug. 23, is open to Oran girls in sixth, seventh and eighth grades in casual attire; the Miss Oran pageant, at 8 p.m., is open to Oran girls in ninth through 12th grades in formal wear. The Miss Oran Chamber of Commerce pageant is for ninth- through 12th-grade girls from throughout Southeast Missouri in formal wear. Entry fee for each contest is $25, and preregistration is required. Melaina's Magical Playland night at Busch

Tickets are on sale for the Sept. 28 baseball game in St. Louis between the St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago Cubs to benefit Melaina's Magical Playland. Tickets are $50 each [face value $74], and proceeds from the event will help bring the first public all-inclusive and fully accessible playground to Southeast Missouri. Lazy L. Safari Park's "All Aboard The Zoo Train"

The Lazy L Safari Park will once again be bringing small animals aboard the St. Louis Iron Mountain Railroad in Jackson from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday. The animals will be part of an educational program for children and adults about zoo animals. Train rates will be $16 for adults, $9 for children ages 3 to 12 and children 2 and under ride free. All children on the train ride will a coupon for a free bag of animal feed for their next visit to the Lazy L Safari Park.

Breast-feeding and infant care class

The class, covering aspects of infant care and safety, would be especially valuable to all first-time parents or as a review for those who have a baby. Grief support group

The gathering allows adults to come together to share grief after the death of a loved one. It is scheduled from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Aug. 21 at HealthPoint in Cape Girardeau. '2 Feet, 4 Paws, One Cause' charity run

The Humane Society of Southeast Missouri will host its first "2 Feet, 4 Paws, One Cause" charity run Aug. 24. The run, which starts and finishes at the Osage Centre, will feature an 8-mile course that starts at 8 a.m. and a 4-mile course that starts 8:15 a.m. The registration cost is $15 for the four-mile run and $25 for the eight-mile run. Southeast Journeys cancer support group

The Southeast Journeys cancer support group will meet from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Aug. 27 in the Unity Room at Southeast Cancer Center. The group will cover educational topics from the American Cancer Society's "I Can Cope" series. Experience 2013 benefit concert

The See Me Through Project will present the Experience 2013 benefit concert live in Hayti Heights, Mo., at 7 p.m. Aug. 31. The concert will be in the Faith Temple Complex COGI and will feature national gospel recording artist Vincent Tharpe Kenosis and more. The See Me Through Project is a not-for-profit organization that aims to educate people about glaucoma. Scott City VFW to host 'Dreams for Caselynn'

The Scott City VFW will host a dinner and auction during "Dreams for Caselynn" from 5 p.m. to midnight on Sept. 7. Caselynn was diagnosed with a genetic, disease spinal muscular atrophy, and proceeds from the dinner and auction will go toward travel and other expenses incurred in getting Caselynn her necessary treatment. The dinner is from 5 to 7 p.m. and the cost is $15 per person or $25 per couple, with donations being accepted at the door. Children 12 and under are free. A live auction is scheduled for 6 p.m., with a band and dance immediately following. There will also be raffles including a 50/50 drawing, and the affair is BYOB. Walk to end Alzheimer's

The Alzheimer's Association 2013 Walk to End Alzheimer's is scheduled for 9 a.m. on Sept. 14 at Cape County Park North, with registration beginning at 8 a.m. Nearly 800 people from the Southeast Missouri area are expected at this year's event to raise awareness and funds to fight Alzheimer's disease. The Walk to End Alzheimer's participants will honor those affected by the disease by taking part in a one- or three-mile walk, and they will also learn more about Alzheimer's disease, advocacy opportunities, clinical trial enrollment and support programs and services offered by the Alzheimer's Association. Kim King Memorial golf tournament rescheduled

The Kim King Memorial golf tournament to help fund the new Facilities Management Endowed Scholarship at Southeast Missouri State University has been rescheduled for Sept. 23. The golf tournament, held in honor of longtime Facilities Management employee Kim King, will be at Bent Creek Golf Course in Jackson. The tournament originally was set for July 22. The event will begin with lunch at 11:30 a.m. followed by a shotgun start at 1 p.m. Team entry is $200, and individual entries are $50. Hole sponsorships are $250. MS Walk to be held in area communities

Walk MS, the signature fundraising event of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, is scheduled Sept. 28 at the West City Park in Dexter, Mo. Community Counseling Center Foundation's 2nd annual Craft Beer Festival

The Community Counseling Center Foundation will hold the 2nd annual Cape Girardeau Craft Beer Festival from noon to 4 p.m. on Oct. 5 at the Cape Girardeau Arena Park and SEMO Fairground Bank of America Show Arena. Admission is $30 in advance and $30 at the gate. This includes a pilsner beer glass; tasting of over 100 beers from over 25 microbreweries; home-brewing demonstrations; and live German music by the Jerry Ford German Band. Food will be available from Cook's Bar-B-Que and there will be hourly drawings for gifts and prizes. All proceeds from the event will go to the Community Counseling Center Foundation to be used for providing improved facilities, equipment and services for persons with mental illness. The Community Counseling Center Foundation 14th annual Benefit Golf Tournament is scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m. on Oct. 4. This will be a 18 hole, 4 person shamble at the beautiful and challenging Cape Girardeau Country Club. Tournament fee is $125.00 per player.
