Cultural heritage workshop scheduled

PERRYVILLE, Mo. -- The Missouri Humanities Council and the Perry County Historical Society will hold a free Cultural Heritage Workshop on Aug. 7 at the Perryville Higher Education Center, 108 S. Progress Dr., in Perryville. The all-day workshop will begin at 8:45 a.m. and end at 4 p.m. Topics covered at the workshop will include economic development, community programming, the importance of place, marketing resources, using social media and the humanities council's grants program. County's Original Families plan reunion

The 2018 Original Families Reunion will be held on Sept. 29 at Bollinger Mill State Park. Descendants of the pioneer families who settled along the Whitewater River around 1800, or anyone connected or interested in early Cape Girardeau County history, is welcome to attend, according to a news release. Planned events include a short presentation from Dr. Frank Nickell, an artifact/document loan table, oral history recording station, and family history tables. It is hoped the reunion will lead to the sharing of artifacts, stories and family histories related to early settlers. Original Families is an organization dedicated to highlighting the rich, early history of Cape Girardeau County. Dementia Caregivers Support Group meeting

A support group for caregivers of those suffering with dementia will meet on Wednesday, Aug. 1, at 1 p.m. at the Whistle Stop Depot at the Iron Mountain Railway in Jackson. The group is open to all caregivers for dementia and Alzheimer's and to family members. Caregivers will have the opportunity to meet with others for support, education and sharing information. The group is sponsored by the Alzheimer's Association and is facilitated by Norm Meyer, Alzheimer's Association volunteer. The group meets the first Wednesday of each month.

Tax-free weekend coming up

Missouri's annual sales-tax-free weekend for school supplies and other related items is coming up. The event runs from 12:01 a.m. Friday, Aug. 3, through Sunday, Aug. 5.

VFW Auxiliary to hold Meet and Greet

VFW Post 3838 Auxiliary will host a meet and greet for potential members. It will be held at 2 p.m. Aug. 5 at the Post, 1049 North Kingshighway in Cape Girardeau. Attendees learn about the programs the auxiliary offers and there will be refreshments provided.Those who come with a current member ready to join the Auxiliary (with their Veteran's DD-214 and first year's dues) will be entered into a drawing.
