Southeast Missouri and Southern Illinois residents and civic groups can nominate and vote for people to win the Spirit of America Award, presented by the Southeast Missourian. The eighth annual award will be given to someone who most embodies American values like patriotism, loyalty, generosity and entrepreneurship. People in Cape Girardeau, Perry, Bollinger, Stoddard and Scott counties in Missouri and Union, Pulaski and Alexander counties in Illinois are eligible to submit nominations and vote until June 15. The award is given out at the Fourth of July Festivities in Cape Girardeau and comes with a $1,000 donation to the charity or civic group chosen by the award recipient. Look for nomination forms inside the Southeast Missourian or on the web at www.semissourian.com/forms/spirit.

The Cape Girardeau Public Library will begin sign-ups for Adult Summer Reading Club June 13. Readers who check out a book from the library and finish it can fill out a form and be entered into a drawing. The drawings will be held weekly. This summer's theme is "Novel Destinations." Stop at the information desk in the library to register and receive an information packet. The reading club continues through Aug. 31.

Missouri author presents state's 100s at library

Missouri author Ann Hazelwood will present a program and book signing event at 7 p.m. June 14 in the Hirsch Room at the Cape Girardeau Public Library. Hazelwood has written Missouri books like "100 Best Secrets of Missouri," "100 Festive Finds in Missouri" and "100 Unique Eats and Eateries in Missouri." Proceeds from the sale of books go toward special library projects.
